Early Life

Anthony J. Mahavorick was born on 29 February 1960 in North Hollywood, California in the United States. Anthony’s parents divorced early in his life when he was 7 year old and he has two younger siblings.

Anthony’s mum remarried a number of times and eventually Tony changed his last name to his stepfather’s surname which was “Robbins.”

Tony Robbins was raised in a number of places in California including Azusa and Glendora.  He attended Glendora High School and he worked as a handyman for money to help support his sibblings.  Anthony left home at 17 years old and after school he did not attend college and worked as a Janitor.

His Career

Tony Robbins began his career working for Jim Rohn helping him promote his seminars.  Later on, Anthony Robbins began as a self-help coach in his own right.

The aim of his seminar was to help the participants achieve peak performance, hence, he called his service peak performance coaching.  Part of his program included NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) and after he learnt to firewalk, he also started incorporating that into his programs, mainly to help participants push through their own fears.

More recently, in 2014, Tony Robbins along with a group of investors, bought the rights to start a Major League Soccer team in Los Angeles beginning in 2017.

The Books he has written

Tony Robbins has written three best-selling books:

The first book was Unlimited Power.  This was published in 1986 and covered several topics including persuasive communication, health and energy, enhancing relationships and overcoming your fears

The second book was published in 1991 and was called Awaken the Giant Within.  This book expanded on his personal development strategies and techniques and was written from a self-help approach with the aim to motivate the reader to adjust their life.

The third book is called Money: Master the Game and was published 2014.  This book is based on information Anthony Robbins has gained from interviews with over 50 financial experts over a number of years.  Some of the interviewee’s include Warren Buffet, Charles R Schwab, Steve Forbes and Carl Icahn.

Controversy

The self-help industry is no stranger to lawsuits.

In 1995, Tony Robbins ran into some issues with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) which was later sorted out and in 1995 Wade Cook the financial seminar guru also sued Robbins.

In 2001 and 2012 Anthony Robins ran into some TV and newspaper reports that were unfavorable. Robbins claimed the stories were either defamatory or inaccurate.

The result of this media attention resulted in either retractions by the media outlet or Robbins received a damages payout as a result of a court case.
